My twins had their graduation pictures taken today. In a gown and mortarboard. They are 5 year old. They are "graduating" from kindergarten.
Kindergarten graduation is the stupidest thing I have ever heard of. What have you accomplished by completing kindergarten? You spend your days coloring pictures and you still get to take a nap. I thought graduation was supposed to represent the culmination of years of work. In Kindergarten, you are just beginning. You don't even know what work is yet.
I'm all for having a party to celebrate the end of this first step in many years of education. But to stick a funny hat on a kid's head and call it a graduation is just ridiculous.

on my list of "the stupidest thing[s] I have ever heard of" Kinder graduation does not make the top 5000.
Just remember that you won't get another mortar board until your HS graduation.
Silly? probably. Do you remember crying a bit when you let your first one go to school that very first day? I remember those days.
And in my city, 'graduation' is about 30 minutes long. God help me if I can't spare 30 minutes 1x in a 9 month school calendar.
Time to lighten u, ya curmudgeon!
High School should be the first time a kid gets a mortarboard. We are undermining the importance of the most significant achievements when we over-inflate the value of the lesser ones. These days kids get kindergarten, elementary, and middle school grads. I just heard that one school is having an elementary prom. How can kids truly appreciate their most important milestones when we have been celebrating all of the lesser ones in exactly the same way?
And I resent the implication that I will not spare 30 minutes from a 9 month school calendar for my children. I never said I wouldn't be there--I just said it was stupid. I have attended every school event in which my children have participated and I will certainly be at this one, too.
I completely and totally agree with legally certifiable on this issue. It is out of control promoting of mediocrity!
My son took his photo today in a cap and gown, and it was really ridiculous. What am I supposed to do with a photo of him in a cap and gown? That is not how I will remember his time at five, and graduation should be a celebration of great achievement. He can read, which is great, but it's true that he has no clue what work is. If I could choose, they would do a program at the end of the year where they sing some songs and show off a bit, but as a parent...graduation is totally insane for a five-year-old.
