My paralegal's wife is having their first baby tomorrow. What should I get them? (And don't say a gift card--I know that is the obvious answer, but I'd like to go more personal. (And yes, I get the irony of asking complete strangers to help me pick out a personal gift for another complete stranger.))

Ummm...I like to get one cute outfit from Baby Gap and a couple of bath books for babies. Unless I know the couple real well and then I splurge like a madwoman on all kinds of baby socks. I can't walk by baby socks without buying them. It's a sickness.
Baby Gap is cool because if the parents hate your adorable outfit that you painstakingly chose, they can always return it and use the credit at a real Gap store. On khakis. Because you can never have enough khakis?
NGS, your comment is hilarious because I was just picking out the most adorable outfit at Baby Gap (and trying to decide whether to add the sweetest little espadrilles--even though I know perfectly well that babies don't need shoes--because they are just so darn cute).
But I am torn between the adorable outfit at Gap and adorable baby socks that look like little mary janes or ballet slippers at Nordstrom.
And I do usually throw a few books in with a baby gift. Hmmmm, maybe I'll just do a huge book basket. I've done that a couple of times before. May get more use than an outfit (but darn those espadrilles are cute!)
get the adorable socks! they are way too expensive someone to buy for themselves, but I got them as a gift for my daugheter and LOVED them - we got compliments on them wherever we went ....
Books are great. Much more memorable! I would also consider (for future times) a gift card for a takeout service or restaurant or, say, Whole Foods, so they don't have to cook.
