The Most Dreaded Word an Associate Can Hear from a Partner

"I know there's a case..."

And thus begins the chase for the ethereal case that may or may not actually exist and definitely will not exist in the jurisdiction that the partner is certain it hails from.

Hahaha... "Find me the case that says..." When Westlaw comes up with that search feature, then they will be worth the price.

I cannot tell you how many times the partners at my firm have posed that exact phrase to me. And six hours later, I usually have wine in my hand and am rocking back and forth because of course the case never existed in the first place. Urban-case-law-legend!

Oh lord, I hate that phrase. Although almost worse than not finding any case at all is finding a case that somewhat says what the partner wants, but in a completely different and unrelated context, such that to cite the case would be misleading (at best....).

Trying to explain that to a partner usually doesn't go well...
