Weird Facebook Friend

So a handful of my Facebook friends are people that I went to high school with that I don't really remember. I'm sure that we went to high school together, but we didn't hang out together and I have only a vague recollection of them.

Once such person, we'll call her Sue, friended DH shortly after she friended me. DH did not know her at all! (I transferred to a new HS at the beginning of my junior year. DH went to second HS, this friend is from 1st HS.) She sent DH a message that said something like, "Hi, I know that you don't know me, but I'm a friend of LC.'s and I wanted to add you as a friend."

We both thought it a little strange, but she seemed harmless enough, so he added her.

Anyway, today is my aunt's birthday. The first thing on my wall is happy birthday wishes to my aunt. And Sue is one of the well-wishers! There is no way on earth that she could know my aunt. My aunt moved from Hometown to another state when I was a kid. I haven't seen her in at least 15 years!!

How freaky is this? Now I wonder if Sue is contacting all of my friends--which truly horrifies me! I checked her friends list, but we only have one other mutual friend who did not go to 1st HS. So maybe not--or maybe everybody else just decided she's a kook and didn't friend her.

Maybe she's just trying (a little too hard) to be nice. Now, it would truly be scary if she found out it was your aunt's birthday on her own, or sent a card, but I think adding her happy birthday wishes to a pre-existing wall post isn't as horrifying or stalkerish as you make it out to be.

My problem isn't that she wished my aunt happy b-day--it was that she is friending my friends and relatives that she doesn't know and using me as that connection--and we weren't even really friends.

It would be different if it were one of the friends that I ran around with in HS and actually knew my family.

Some people don't really "get" internet etiquette. I made the mistake of adding some dude I didn't actually know, but who wanted to promote his band. And that's fine, whatev, I'll add people with limited profile view if I don't actually know them. Yeah... then he started looking at my photos and making creepy comments, so he got unfriended. Gross.

There are people who have over five thousand friends on FB. I know a couple people in my town who each have over two thousand. Maybe she's just trying to be like that, trying to up her numbers any way she can.

Okay, that is just weird. I will say Happy Birthday to my Facebook friends and it may be the only contact I have with some of them all year. But to say it to their relatives? Um... nooooo. Weird!!!
