Women die after Nicaragua's ban on abortions - Health - MSNBC.com
This makes me so angry I don't even think I can write a sensible post right now. A woman (and law student) in Nicaragua died because her doctors refused to treat an ectopic pregnancy. They refused to treat her because Nicaragua, under the direction of the Roman Catholic Church, has a total ban on abortion for any reason. So even in a case like this where there is virtually no chance the embryo will survive and a very great chance the mother will die or suffer permanent damage to her reproductive system, the doctors will not intervene for fear of losing their medical licenses. It just disgusts me that the church has so much power over the lives--and death--of these women.

“When two lives are in danger, you must try to save both the woman and the child. It’s difficult to say now that it isn’t possible to save both.”
Only a flaming idiot who knows nothing about medicine or pregnancy could possibly say that. That makes me incredibly angry, especially considering the problems I've had with this pregnancy. No priest, and not even the pope, is going to force me to give my life for a cluster of reproductive cells that's going to die anyway. I dare my priest to tell me otherwise, he'd be short two parishioners real quick.
This is horrible! Someone was telling me the other day that the new pope is dragging catholics back to the dark ages. It will be interesting to see how that plays out in modern society. Will people start fleeing the catholic church or will they embrace the "return to stronger moral values." Ick.
I had read elsewhere last month that Nicaragua doesn't actually ban abortions for ectopic pregnancies as a rule (the fetus isn't technically in the womb and so the procedure isn't technically an abortion). But most doctors don't know the exact rules and most are afraid to take the chance.
